Week 6 Power Rankings:
Another crazy week in Colorado High School Football is behind us. Eaglecrest knocks off Arvada West in a blowout, Discovery Canyon rolls Pueblo East, needless to say, there were some surprise scores.
The staff adjusted their rankings as we enter league play and a stretch of games where contenders will rise to the top and the pretenders will fall by the waste side.
Here are the Jenkins Elite Week 6 Power Rankings:
Class 5A Rankings - Tim
#1 - Cherry Creek (5-0)
Tim’s Take: With a 49-7 win over Chaparral I see little reason why to change them from the number one ranking they had a week ago. Dave Logan and Alex Padilla have this team rolling. Let’s be honest the only real beef I have with Cherry Creek has nothing to do with them and has everything to do with MaxPreps having them ranked the 111th best team in the country. This is a top 25 HS team.
#2 - Valor Christian (5-0)
Tim’s Take: I am downright impressed with their 27-0 win out of state. They played a good Menlo-Atherton team and shut them down. Ed McCaffrey needs to find a way to keep them locked in as they enter league after dominating such a tough out of league schedule.
#3 - Columbine (5-0)
Tim’s Take: I wish I could sit around and act like I know a lot about Olathe North but I don’t know anything about them. What I do know is that Columbine rolled to a 48-12 Victory.
#4 - Cherokee Trail (5-0)
Tim’s Take: With a win over another good team in Lakewood, Cherokee Trail deserves this slot. I am biased because of Joe Johnson being over there but I know this team has great coaches and the skill players to make a deep playoff run.
#5 - Eaglecrest (5-0)
Tim’s Take: Well I am man enough to admit when I am wrong, and boy was I wrong on the Arvada West Eaglecrest game. Congrats to Eaglecrest on the huge win despite everything that has happened at that school this year.
Next Five
#6-Grandview (5-0) #7-ThunderRidge (4-1) #8-Fairview (4-1) #9-Arvada West (4-1) #10-Castle View (4-1)
Class 5A Rankings - Justin
#1 - Cherry Creek (5-0)
Justin’s Take: Dominant performance in all phases of the game. Don’t want to give to much credit for beating Chaparral but they did exactly what they were expected to do.
#2 - Valor Christian (5-0)
Justin’s Take: No idea who Menlo-Atherton are but they were 2-1 coming in and couldn’t manage a point against this Valor Christian defense that could be shaping up into one of the top units in the state.
#3 - Columbine (5-0)
Justin’s Take: Olathe North came into the game as a highly ranked Kansas team and leaves as a team that couldn’t crack the top 10 in 3A Colorado! Good luck next week against Olathe South. Columbine rolls on but the status quo stays the same at the top of 5A.
#4 - Eaglecrest (5-0)
Justin’s Take: Truly an impressive victory over previously unbeaten Arvada West. This definitely warranted a move into the top 5.
#5 - Grandview (5-0)
Justin’s Take: 56-3 over Mullen is always impressive! Paired with a close overtime win from Smoky Hill against Far Northeast, I can no longer deny that Smoky Hill in the top 5 is a pipe dream. Grandview belongs in the top 5 and the team has officially risen to the top of 5A, each top 5 team is undefeated and looking like a contender.
Next Five
#6-Smoky Hill (5-0) #7-Ralston Valley (4-1) #8-Pomona (3-2) #9-Cherokee Trail (5-0) #10-Fairview (4-1)
Class 5A Rankings - Joe
#1 - Cherry Creek (5-0)
Joe’s Take: All things standard this week. Cherry Creek looks good and is taking care of business.
#2 - Valor Christian (5-0)
Joe’s Take: Playing any team from out of state is always a challenge in High School because of the number of variables and differences in programs and talent. Valor took care of business with ease.
#3 - Columbine (5-0)
Joe’s Take: Another out of state matchup that was handled nicely. Columbine is rolling they have a very good team this year.
#4 - Eaglecrest (5-0)
Joe’s Take: The ability to overcome adversity at this level is rare. Eaglecrest hasn’t blinked an eye through all the outside noise. Very impressive win this week vs. an explosive Arvada West football team.
#5 - Grandview (5-0)
Joe’s Take: Winning in a blowout to a capable Mullen football team is an impressive win. Grandview is showing they should be in the conversation with the top teams in the state.
Next Five
#6-Cherokee Trail (5-0) #7-Pomona (3-2) #8-Arvada West (4-1) #9-Smoky Hill (5-0) #10-Ralston Valley (4-1)
Class 4A Rankings - Tim
#1 - Loveland (4-0)
Tim’s Take: Ladies and gentlemen here is the deal, if you are ranked #1 the week before and then roll a team 31-0 you stay there. Plain and simple the Indians are the top team in 4A.
#2 - Pine Creek (4-1)
Tim’s Take: Pine Creek won a tight game this week. They did not play their best, but guess what they won. If there is one thing I know about Coach Miller, with a bye week believe me the Eagles will be rolling in two weeks.
#3 - Heritage (4-0)
Tim’s Take: Listen winning every game is not easy. That is exactly what Heritage is doing week in and week out. They deserve to be number three.
#4 - Montrose (4-0)
Tim’s Take: This win over Palisade is impressive. Palisade is a good well-coached football team and they beat them soundly. I am impressed with this Montrose team and in two weeks they will have a showdown with Heritage.
#5 - Broomfield (3-1)
Tim’s Take: I debated putting Longmont here but I think Broomfield deserves the spot. Led by coach Blair Hubbard and senior Quarterback Steven Croell this team is loaded with talent.
Next Five
#6-Longmont (3-1) #7-Skyline (3-1) #8-Ponderosa (2-2) #9-Greeley West (3-1) #10-Vista Peak Prep (4-0)
Class 4A Rankings - Justin
#1 - Loveland (4-0)
Justin’s Take: 31-0 over Windsor. Yawn. Call when the playoffs start, this team will not be challenged for the rest of the regular season.
#2 - Pine Creek (4-1)
Justin’s Take: Ugly game for the Eagles who were looking to get back on track after the loss to Valor Christian. Sloppy play and a 1-9 passing performance, there are legitimate questions as to whether or not this team can compete at the top with Loveland.
#3 - Broomfield (3-1)
Justin’s Take: After the loss to Loveland I kept this team at number 3 and they have not disappointed. A combined 81-7 over the last two weeks! Hard to imagine a better response to a tough loss.
#4 - Longmont (3-1)
Justin’s Take: Great game between number 4 and 5 in the classification! Number 4 won in a shootout, I see no reason to change anything in the 4A top 5.
#5 - Skyline (3-1)
Justin’s Take: See above.
Next Five
#6-Ponderosa (2-2) #7-Montrose (4-0) #8-Rampart (3-2) #9-Heritage (4-0) #10-Greeley West (3-1)
Class 4A Rankings - Joe
#1 - Loveland (4-0)
Joe’s Take: I wrote this before Loveland beat Windsor because I knew it would happen. Loveland stays at the top.
#2 - Pine Creek (4-1)
Joe’s Take: This team is back to there normal scheduled programming and took care of business.
#3 - Broomfield (3-1)
Joe’s Take: Broomfield show they have some serious firepower and the ability to run you out of the gym.
#4 - Montrose (4-0)
Joe’s Take: This team had a big win this week. Palisade is 3A but can really play some ball. I really like how Montrose is taking care of business.
#5 - Longmont (3-1)
Joe’s Take: Oakley is a dog and was able to rally the troops and beat a good Skyline football team. Maybe proved Skyline isn’t as good as we thought.
Next Five
#6-Heritage (4-0) #7-Ponderosa (2-2) #8-Pueblo West (3-2) #9-Rampart (3-2) #10-Skyline (3-1)
Class 3A Rankings - Tim
#1 - Palmer Ridge (3-2)
Tim’s Take: Another big win for Palmer Ridge this week coming alive in the second half to roll 45-14. They are getting the running game going and led by coach Tom Pulford these boys will be firing on all cylinders come playoff time.
#2 - Erie (4-0)
Tim’s Take: My bold prediction, if Erie gets through this week against Mead they roll to an undefeated regular season. This team is the real deal led by coach Chad Cooper.
#3 - Harrison (4-0)
Tim’s Take: With another big win, there is no reason to change my rankings now. Harrison is rolling and will be serious playoff contenders.
#4 - Discovery Canyon (5-0)
Tim’s Take: I can not wait to see how high this team shows up in the other two rankings after they both acted like this team can’t play. Well, they rolled East last week and look like a team who will be the real deal come November.
#5 - Holy Family (3-1)
Tim’s Take: The more Discovery Canyon rolls the better Holy Family looks. This team can flat out rip the ball through the air and I love it. Holy Family in at number five!
Next Five
#6-Thomas Jefferson (4-0) #7-Palisade (3-1) #8-Durango (3-2) #9-George Washington (2-2) #10-Pueblo East (3-2)
Class 3A Rankings - Justin
#1 - Erie (4-0)
Justin’s Take: With a 55-7 victory this week over Canon City, Erie has solidified itself as the top team in 3A. I would love to see a little more balance on offense, or any attempt at balance whatsoever, but this is old school football. Still 1-2 for 15 yards passing will not beat Palmer Ridge!
#2 - Palmer Ridge (3-2)
Justin’s Take: 5 TD’s rushing for a team with the most explosive passing game in the state! This is what I want to see from a team that has struggled to find its form from a year ago. If you load up to stop Ty Evans and the pass, this team finally has the right answers.
#3 - Harrison (4-0)
Justin’s Take: Slow start, but Harrison was able to get on track in the second half and secure its fourth straight victory to go with no defeats. This is a tough and physical team with a special player at quarterback, not a lot of blowouts but they make the plays needed to win games.
#4 - Thomas Jefferson (4-0)
Justin’s Take: 4-0 record and a 44-0 victory this week and it was just becoming too hard to ignore this team. Tough stretch begins in two weeks as they will host Discovery Canyon followed by a trip to Palmer Ridge.
#5 - Discovery Canyon (5-0)
Justin’s Take: 52-24 over previously #1 ranked Pueblo East is a great way to rocket up the standings. Still, at the end of this game I was asking myself what’s wrong with East, not what am I missing in Discovery Canyon.
Next Five
#6-Palisade (3-1) #7-Durango (3-2) #8-Holy Family (3-1) #9-Fort Morgan (3-1) #10-Pueblo East (3-2)
Class 3A Rankings - Joe
#1 - Erie (4-0)
Joe’s Take: Handled business as predicted. This is a team will make a serious run in the playoffs for a state title.
#2 - Palmer Ridge (3-2)
Joe’s Take: Palmer Ridge is still the most talented team in 3A. As they continue to settle in, it will be no surprise to see a state title run.
#3 - Discovery Canyon (5-0)
Joe’s Take: Beating what we thought was a good Pueblo East team looks like a good win. Could show to not be as impressive if Pueblo East continues to show they were a one hit wonder with the Palmer Ridge win.
#4 - Thomas Jefferson (4-0)
Joe’s Take: Undefeated and playing good football. Hopefully this team can stay healthy and focused to make a run in the playoffs.
#5 - Harrison (4-0)
Joe’s Take: Winning games always deserves love. I like how this team attacks people from all aspects of the game.
Next Five
#6-Durango (3-2) #7-Palisade (3-1) #8-Holy Family (3-1) #9-Fort Morgan (3-1) #10-Pueblo East (3-2)
